Government should spend money on railways rather than roads. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

What transport infrastructure should be invested in is often a topic for discussion. Some people think that the government should allocate more of their budget to develop railways instead of roads. However, I disagree with this statement as I believe it is road infrastructure that should be invested more in.

On the one hand, the governments should spend large amounts of money on the restoration and expansion of railways. In some regions, especially in developing countries, rail tracks are old, rusty, and crack easily under weight pressure, which means they need to be restored or replaced with the help of government funding to meet safety requirements. Besides, more money should be spent on expanding railway routes and destinations people can go to by train to attract more rail passengers, which can alleviate the pressure caused by traffic congestion on roads.

On the other hand, roads should receive more investment from the government than rails since they are still the most used. The majority of vehicles travel on roads; therefore, roads can get ramshackle quickly after a short time in use and as a result need to be restored frequently. Moreover, in countries where railways or subways are not fully developed, more roads have to be built each year to meet the increasing number of travelers. For instance, in Saigon, a major city in Vietnam, the government expends significant amounts of money every year to construct bypasses or flyovers to reduce traffic jams.

In conclusion, although railways deserve to be invested in, I still hold a firm belief that the governments should spend more money on improving and expanding roads because they are used more frequently than railways.
