Hello! Newbie, Certification Help!

Hi everyone, I am new to these forums. I am 42 and my name is Johnny. I have fresh BA in English and a minor in Writing and Rhetoric from a solid Liberal Arts College. Of course that does not entitle me to do anything. I am volunteering as an ESL teacher at the local Literacy Volunteers. I want to teach ESL abroad, but don't know how useful a TEFL Cert. would be vs. CELTA or any of the other certifications. I just talked to a friend of my sister who is in the US for a few weeks and has been teaching abroad for 20 years. He was kind of snobby about smaller certifications and said the ONLY way I will get any kind of job that doesn't leave me starving is to get my CT State Teacher's Certification and then go abroad. According this guy he makes a lot of cash and gets totally hooked-up by the schools he works for. His degree is MA in TESOL, but he teaches a variety of subjects in all kinds of Countries. I just want to get by and live a decent life outside the US. I am also in the application process for the Peace Corps, they are interested in me as an ESL person. Peace Corps has it's downfalls, so does everything else. I'm just wondering what kind of weight a TEFL Cert. from a decent school in South/Central America, or somewhere else will have? Thanks so much for any replies.

In Japan, a TEFL certificate will certainly help you get you work in a commercial language school or in the public school system. I have lived reasonably well here with one for over 20 years (I now run my own little language school). The only positions that require MAs now are university positions.

  • In most countries, I think, commercial language schools and private students are happy to have you if you are a college graduate and a friendly, outgoing person.
