Can you say "a banana" or "two bananas"? Yes? It means bananas are countable.
Can you say "a sugar" or "two sugars"? No? It means sugar is uncountable.
She understood quite quickly.

There are of course nouns that are both countable a uncountable depending on the context they are used.
