Part 3 in A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, Laila realizes she is pregnant with Tariq. After hearing a lie from Rasheed’s friend, Laila decides to marry Rasheed. At first, Mariam and Laila have some grudges for each other, but after Laila protects Mariam against Rasheed, they become fond for each other. They take care of Laila’s babies and do house chores together. Moreover, two of them try escape from Rasheed. In the end, Mariam heroically sacrifices herself to save Laila and the children. Mariam admits the killing of Rasheed to the Taliban so that Tariq, Laila, and the two children can leave the miserable place safely. The last two parts, the author talks about two unfortunate women who are fighting for a better future. Although Rasheed tries any way he could to chain these women, he has to pay his price at the end. Laila finds a better with the one she loves, Tariq. Mariam, on the other hand, finds her courage to die for the people she loves. Mariam has a big heart. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, there are some of similarities and differences.
First of all, Both Mariam and Laila express a lot of hopes throughout the novel, but once reality sets in, one’s hope is crushed. For instance, Mariam thinks she could attend school for a better future, but oppositely she has to marry Rasheed who ruins her whole life. For Laila, hope lies in Tariq and an attempted escape from Rasheed. Secoundly, the men in the novel share a common shame. Jalil and Rasheed are both scare of others’ judgmental. They are afraid to bring shame to their names. For instance, Jalil kicks Nana out of his house when she is pregnant with him. Furthermore, he is afraid to take Mariam into town. Likewise, Rasheed notes that he is marrying Laila because he does not want others to talk about him. He also spends more money than he has to make his family seem wealthy. Finally, the women in A Thousand Splendid Suns have very different educational experiences. Mariam only needs to learn to endure, whereas Laila’s parents emphasize more in proper education. Laila’s father even tutors her himself.
In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Hosseini creates a fierce environment for Mariam and Laila. They are abused by Rasheed. Moreover, the rise of Taliban impacts them more because of their laws. When they try to run, Talaban’s unjust laws prevent them to escape. Basically Mariam’s and Laila’s lives are depended on Rasheed. A Thousand Splendid Suns makes its reader symthapize for Mariam and Laila as well as mad at Jalil and Rasheed for their unethically shameful behavior toward women.
thanks!
