'To' would not be possible in that sentence in BrE.

#1 ("to the cinema") is wrong.
#2 ("in the cinema") is correct, but the best preposition in this case is "at".

It's been a long time since I was last at the cinema.

Whoa! Emotion: surprise I wouldn't have guess

CalifJim It doesn't sound brilliant to me, but passable.
"I was to the place" has not been possible in BrE for at least a century.

Hmm. So it looks like "have been to (place)" has won out.

Well,

It's been a long time since I last went to the cinema/movies - perfectly fine and indeed how I'd say it.

But...

It's been a long since I was last to the movies -

Yeah. I'm starting to think that, too. Still, it doesn't sound totally awful to my ear. Google only has eight examples of "since I was last to the", but they all sound fine to me. They are like these:

since I was last to the [website / (military) base

To be honest, I have some difficulty digesting these examples - I just wouldn't say it like that, CJ! But that's just me.

And a lot of other people. Remember, these were from Google and there were only eight examples. In the grand scheme of things, that's basically zero.
