At first, “The Necklace” is Maupassant’s famous mystery story that has a surprise ending. The main character, Mathilde Loisel, a pitiful and beautiful young woman who is dreaming to have better life borrows the necklace from her wealthy friend. The necklace changes Mathilde and her husband’s life dramatically.
One night, Mr. Loisel, Mathilde’s husband and a clerk, brings an envelope, inviting for a party at the Ministry of Education, to please Mathilde. However, she gets upset to her husband with the invitation because she has nothing to wear to go to the party. Mr. Loisel gives up the money for the next vacation to buy Mathilde’s new dress for attending the dinner party. Even though she buys the new fancy dress, she complains that she wants to have some jewelry wearing with the dress to her husband. He suggests Mathilde to ask her wealthy friend, Mrs. Forrestier, borrowing some jewels. Mrs. Forrestier, a kind woman, let Mathilde select jewels from her jewel boxes, and Mathilde lends a wonderful diamond necklace which fascinates her very much.
At the party, Mathilde is a great success. She is the most beautiful, elegant, and fashionable woman at the ball. Every man finds her, talks to her, and wants to dance with her. Until four a.m., Mathilde does not leave the party, even though her husband has already prepared to leave the party and slept at the small room for waiting for Mathilde to be ready since midnight. She enjoys the party and forgets everything of her boring and ordinary life at the ball.
Mathilde notices that she has lost the necklace when she takes the scarf off at home. She tells her husband that the necklace is missing and nowhere beside her. He goes back over the way they walk, and calls to the cab companies, goes to the police office, and puts the announce of the necklace on the newspapers. However, he never finds the necklace. Mathilde and her husband do not think that they tell the truth of missing the necklace to Mrs. Forrestier. Therefore, Mathilde wrote the letter, which tells that she breaks the necklace which takes a time to repair, for Mrs. Forrestier to delay returning it. For finding the necklace that Mathilde loses, Mathilde and her husband go to the many jewelry stores. Then, they find the diamond necklace which looks precisely the same as what she loses after the party. The diamond necklace costs 36000 francs. Her husband only has 18000 francs that he inherits from his father. He owes other 18000 francs to several finance companies and other illegal loan companies. Then, Mathilde returns the replaced necklace to Mrs. Forrestier who is irritated because Mathilde turns in the necklace sooner.
Paying back the money, Mathilde and her husband move to a small room and fire the maid. Moreover, Mathilde starts doing dirty house chores that she never does and experiences because the maid always does for her. Also, Mr. Loisel works accounting and copying until late night making extra money. They spend ten years to pay the entire money back with some extra charges to the financial companies. After paying back the money, Mathilde looks older than her age. Her hands are chapped, and also, her hair is messy and disheveled now. Infrequently, she goes look back at the dinner party at Ministry of Education when her husband is not at home.
One day, Mathilde sees Mrs. Forrestier, who still looks young, pretty, and charming, with her child. Mathilde talks to Mrs. Forrestier, yet she does not notice that the woman who talks to her is Mathilde, so Mathilde tells who she is to her friend. Mrs. Forrestier takes Mathilde’s hands and asks what happen to her because Mathilde’s appearance is changed totally. Thus, Mathilde tells the truth of the replacing necklace to Mrs. Forrestier. Mrs. Forrestier tells her that the necklace is made of fake diamonds, so it just cost 500 francs.
“The Necklace” is a third person narrative story, and it effects strongly in the story. Beginning of the story, explaining Mathilde’s lifestyle and her thought by the narrative shows that there is a difference between who she is, a lower class wife, now and who she wants to be, a fortune, well. Also, stating the necklace as “her treasure” and “a superb necklace” reflects reader to consider that the necklace is truly at a high price.
