when i want to ask someone if he finished his laundry

Do i ask did you finish or have you finisehd?

and whats the difference?

The subtle difference would be the situation in which you are asking.

If the person I was asking was in the laundry room, I would ask "have you finished?"

If he was in any other place, I would ask "did you finish?"

What would you say when checking homework at school: Have you done your homework? or Did you do your homework?

I usually use the latter.
