In the Lord of the Flies young English boys quickly turn barbaric. There were three major factors in the boys turning barbaric. The first is in the beginning of the novel, the boys were proper and were wearing nice close. They were also very polite and acted like normal young kids there age. They also let most of the people speak and had a democratic form of running the island. This all quickly changed, the boys were not polite and often swore at each other. They also got very dirty which forced them to go naked. Which could of made the kids feel barbaric. Also some kids got picked on such as piggy, instead of being polite to each other, they started picking on each other. This occurred because they all had a short tempers, because of the situation they were in. Therefore the proper neat English were now naked and rude to each other which is one way they turned barbaric. The second factor is there lack of rules. In the beginning of the novel the boys wanted rules and a leader so they elected Ralph to tell them what to do. This worked in the beginning, but the boys started disrespecting Ralph and not listening to him. This is because of the obsession with the pig. Instead of doing what Ralph told them to do they were to obsessed with killing the pig. “We need hunter to get us meat.” So because of this there was basically no rules on the island even though at first the boys wanted some structure. So essentially the boys were to do what they wanted, which in turn made them barbaric because they didn’t have any guideline. The third and last problem was the boys lost there parents. Essentially the reason why the boys were so well behaved when they arrived was because of there parents. That quickly wore off when the boys figured out that there was no one to punish them if the miss behaved. In the beginning the boys dismissed the problem of not having there parents. They expected it to be easy with out them. “ there aren’t any grownups. We will have to take care of our selves.”(p21 Lord of the flies) The boys did not anticipate how hard it was going to be without there parents. With out there parents the boys turned barbaric because they were not afraid of anyone and did wanted they wanted inculding killing.
