HELLLPPP - Reasons for attendance - Philip Larkin

0 Hello there, 02br
02br
00Im from scotland, and im sitting my HIGHER english exam on FRIDAY!!! 02br
02br
00Im a bit stuck at a few things.... its pretty hard for me. 02br
02br
00I have been reading the posts about My Last Duchess, and they proved verrrry helpfull! 02br
02br
00So... im going to post another poem which i cannot find reviews for anywhere... Reasons For Attendance - Philip Larkin. 02br
02br
02br
00The trumpets voice, Loud and authoritive, 02br
00Draws me a moment to the lighted glass 02br
00To watch the dancers - all under twenty-five - 02br
00Shifting intently, face to flushed face, 02br
00Solemnly on the beat of happiness. 02br
02br
00- Or so i fancy, sensing the smoke and sweat, 02br
00The wonderful feel of girls. Why be out here? 02br
00But then, why be in there? Sex, yes, but what 02br
00Is sex? Surely, to think the lions share 02br
00Of happiness is found by couples - sheer 02br
02br
00Inaccuracy as far as im concerned. 02br
00What calls me is that listed, rough-tongued bell 02br
00(Art, if you like) whose individual sound 02br
00insists i too am individual 02br
00It speaks; I hear; others may hear as well, 02br
02br
00But not for me, nor I for them; and so 02br
00With happiness. Therfore I stay outside, 02br
00Believing this; and they maul to and fro, 02br
00Believing that; and both are satisfied, 02br
00If no one has misjudged himself. Or lied. 02br
02br
00Any help is greatly appreciated, as I have not got many notes on the poem so far, a few mere annotations! 02br
02br
00The review of My Last Duchess from ANNIE was amazing, something like that would be out of this world, but I realise that’s asking a lot! 02br
02br
02br
02br
02br
02br
00Ok that’s the poem, heres a few POSSIBLE sample questions from previous exams, so you have an idea what I should know…? 02br
02br
02br
00Choose a poem about old age. 02br
00Explain what impression the poet creates of old age and discuss how eddectively the impression is created. 02br
00In your answer refer closely to at least two of: Theme, imagery, word choice, structure, mood and any other appropriate feature. 02br
02br
00Choose a poem which you think could be described as a ‘quiet’ or ‘reflective’ poem. 02br
00Show how the poet has achieved this effect and discuss to what extent you find it a suitable way of dealing the subject matter in the poem. 02br
00Refer to mood, theme, sound, imagery, rhythm or any other appropriate feature. 02br
02br
00Choose a poem that explores lonliness or isolation. 02br
00Show how the poet explores the theme and discuss to what extent your appreciation of the theme was deepend by the poets treatment. 02br
02br
00Thanks mcadam 0-

0 Hello NHF, welcome to English Forums! 02br 02br 00My Last Duchess is a 'bookish' poem, so it helps to know a little about the background. This poem is different; I would say that the only 'external' fact you need to know is that Larkin finished writing it in December 1953 – on the 30th December, in fact.

In reason's for attendance Larkin juxtaposes several ideas which can simply be condensed to his struggle to please his contemporary reader (interested more in the sensual experience of poetry) or his victorian readers (interested more in the physical beauty of poetry). You could also interpret this poem as a struggle to find happiness. Wether happiness can be achieved through the sensual advan
