Held/experienced/took on various jobs.

During his first fifty year, John Brown moved around the country, living at different times in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York. Brown held various jobs and attempted to do business, but never acquired great riches.

HI,
Is it correct to view the bolded part in the above as "experienced different jobs" and "took on different jobs?" Thanks.
