heightened colour, characteristically

For me, lowered eyebrows, narrowed eyes, pursed lips, and perhaps a heightened colour would suggest "an angry look".

Characteristically, the head is slightly lowered, and the "angry look" is directed from under the eyebrows.

What does the "heightened colour" and "characteristcally" mean in this context?

Please help me.
