I read through a book and came across a phrase "your senses are hightended"

from the context below:

"When you are scared, your senses are hightended"

what does it mean by hightended senses?

It means that when we’re in this state, stimuli (like sounds, lights etc.) don’t have to be as strong (loud, bright etc.) as usual for us to perceive them.
