He’d started to go grey

For the first time I saw a man so much older than me. He’d started to go grey and his hairline had receded.

Is it not natural if I say ' his hair' had started to go grey? Thanks!

"His hair had started to go grey" would also be correct, but would be like hitting the listener over the head, since "go grey" refers to his hair. Also, in the phrase "go grey," "grey" is spelled "gray" (in the US).
