He'd reach out to touch the child.

"When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him."

this is the first sentence of the novel 'the road' written by Cormac McCarthey.

I have a wondering part at this sentence.

"he'd reach out"

does it mean 'he would reach out'? or 'he had reach out'?

I think that if it is <had>, it should've been written <he'd reached out>

If it is <would>, I want to know the difference, compared to <he reached out>

I am not good at English. I'm afraid even you won't understand my question.

thank you.
