“How is that possible?” I’d ask. “Everybody does it.”
“It’s disgusting, and I simply don’t do it,” he’d say.

Why did the speaker use 'would' after 'ask' and 'say'? Thanks.

Would the meaning be different if she used 'I ask' and 'he says'? What does 'would' change?
