What does they mean by 'Hector is a simpler creature than that'?

Isaac: Hector doesn't like when the animals fight. Carmilla has the court whipped up. Discord is loud. It bothers him.

Dracula: Is he still loyal?

Tara2 What does they the writer mean by 'Hector is a simpler creature than that'? I don't have the full context, but I would guess it means that Hector is simple (not cunning) and would not think of betraying someone.
