Clearly, they have put their hearts into it.

And

Should heart be plural?

It should be plural if you are talking about more than one person, each with his or her own individual heart. If, however, you are talking about the one heart of the group as a whole, then it would be singular. If you wanted to make it more individual and make it singular, you could say, "Each one put his heart into it."
