hearing news

Please let me know whether the continuous verb HEARING, is correct in the below sentence.

I am HEARING the news like "Country is in deep recession".

I feel here the word HEARING has very broad meaning. In the sense, I might got the info from various sources like news papers, news channels, from colleagues etc. I need not be exactly hear with EARS. So, I feel we can use HEARING.

Please confirm my understanding. Also please let me know the reason if my understanding is wrong.

Thanks,

Ravi

You are right.
(You do need to say "The country is.." and not just "Country is..." however.)
