Heard this on a podcast about basketball

Is this correct or just spoken English?

Would it be correct to say « save yourself on » as it not play a lot of defense so you have more energy on offense ?

Is apply the correct word?

He doesn't play a whole lot of defense. He saves himself on defense and applies all the energy to offense.

Thanks
