Hear vs heard

"I heard Iran is a great and beautiful country."

What's wrong here? It sounds OK to me. Why do many people consider "heard" wrong?

I believe "heard" refers to a specific, one-time event in this context.

Ex: Yesterday, on NPR, I heard Iran is a great and beautiful country.

Hear is for the present. Heard is for the past." I hear it is" vs "I heard is was" may be more correct.
