Try to choose all your verbs from the same group unless you are deliberately contrasting times.

Group 1: am, is, are, do, does, have, has, will, can, may, must, and all present-tense forms (take(s), meet(s), see(s),...).
Group 2: was, were, did, had, would, could, and all past-tense forms (took, met, saw, ...)

You can use "was" in those statements if you are really focusing on the fact that the leaning was happening in the past.
