Hear from somebody

Hello there.

I have a question regarding the phrasal verb "hear from somebody."

What does the sentence "Nobody has ever heard from her since then" mean? Does it mean the same thing as "Nobody has ever received a letter from her since then"?

Actually, there is a description which can be read as the above in a study guide apparently written by a non-native teacher. I looked up in a couple of dictionaries and found that this expression means "to receive information or news from somebody; to receive a letter, a telephone call, etc. from somebody." If so, I think it follows that "Nobody has ever heard from her since then" means "Nobody has ever received any information or news, not to mention letters, from her." Is my understanding correct?
