Hear and listen.,.,

can anyone tell me the difference between the two???

Basically, 'hear' is a verb of unconscious action, of reflex or accident, while 'listen to' (notice that 'to' always follows it if transitive) is a verb of conscious action, of intention: I was listening to my iPod when I heard the phone ring.

You can also loosely define 'listen' as 'want to hear'. The same with 'watch' and 'see'.

When you listen to something, you are attending, you are paying attention, you are trying to hear. When you hear something, it just happens whether you are trying to hear it or not.
