Head word of Phrase

In using the bolt cutter shown, a worker applies two 75-lb forces to the handles .

In the phrase In using the bolt cutter shown, what is the head word ,Is this phrase called prepositional or participle phrase ? How can we identify it easily? I sometime get really confused while naming the phrases.

In my opinion, the gerund phrase "using the bolt cutter shown" is object of the preposition "in."

So the phrase you quote is a prepositional phrase.

I too continue to struggle with the names of phrases.

I agree with Avangi. You can't go directly to the -ing with your analysis and leave out in.
