Does the following context mean:

1. if we did not laugh, smile, or chuckle, perhaps Grooms would feel disappointed or even insulted

or

2. if we did not laugh, smile, or chuckle, perhaps it would be like disappointing and insulting Grooms

Context:

It is hard not to smile looking at a Red Grooms’ work. In fact, perhaps that Grooms would be disappointed, or even insulted, if we did not laugh, smile, or chuckle.
