"He was tired because he was studying so hard."

Hello, everyone:

He was tired because he was studying so hard.

He was tired because he had been studying so hard.

May I ask what their difference is? I think both of them are almost the same, but I don't know what their difference is. Could you tell me? Thank you!!

I find the second sentence to flow much better. The first would sound better as: He was tired from having studied so hard.
