He was doing well considering the circumstances

Umea University Hospital, where the man is recovering after being rescued by police and a rescue team, said in a statement he was doing well considering the circumstances.

Is the circumstances okay? Is it odd to say "his condition" instead?

Top answer

It's not odd, but it doesn't mean the same thing. The circumstances might be that he fell off a roof into a tiger enclosure and nearly drowned when he jumped into a pool after catching fire. His condition might be severe lacerations, broken limbs, clawed eyeballs, contaminated-water poisoning and third-degree burns.
