“He was dead ..." Help please!

Dear Teachers! Someone said “He was dead 3 years ago." is not a good sentence, and should use “He died 3 years ago." Is that true? Why? Please answer it by native. Another comparison >>“The store was closed yesterday” vs, “ The store was over yesterday” any difference ”**Thanks a lot
