He was able to go? vs He might be able to go?

Hi teachers,
Context:
Where can I go? he thought. Perhaps I can escape from the country, but I want to see my wife again before I leave … or before the police find me.

Are both correct?
a) Where did he think he was able to go? Out of the country.
b) Where did he think he might be able to go? Out of the country.
