[He usually used] or [He usually uses]

I have made up the examples below.

(1a) I have seen him solve some math problems. He usually used algebraic methods for doing them.

(1b) I have seen him solve some math problems. He usually uses algebraic methods for doing them.

Some of my non-native English speaking friends think (1a) is correct because the first sentence is in the present perfect tense. My other friends think (1b) is correct because algebraic methods are what he chooses to use repeatedly.

I am not sure who is right. Please help me. Thank you very much.

Neither is wrong, but (1b) is more consistent in the use of tenses. The argument that algebraic methods are what he chooses to use repeatedly is persuasive in my opinion. CJ
