He told me to sit outside

Dear all,

Please see the sentence "He asked me to sit outside". I saw this sentence in a video of a non-native speaker. Could you please tell me if we say "He told me to sit outside", do we get a similar meaning? If no, please tell me the difference in the meaning between the two sentences.
