As for the following question tags, which are correct?

1. I believed that he was my best friend, didn't I?

AvangiThe questions should refer back to the subject of the main clause. In the first and fourth examples, they only refer back to the subject of the second (subordinate/relative?) clause.

I thought I'd found a context for that example, and that it worked... But are you saying that a question tag can only refer to the main clause, or just that those examples are kind of weird? I think I learned here that a question tag refers to the clause you are "questioning", which is not necessarily the main clause. Avangi said that a question tag mustrefer back to

I think the best way to put it might be to say that it is easiest and "safest" to use tag questions in very simple sentences. LOL

Consider this:
"He's handsome, isn't he?" basically means "He's handsome. Isn't that right?"
"I think he's handsome, don't you?" basically means "I think he's handsome. Don't you think so too?"
