Hi,

#1 seems a bit redundant to me. #2 is better, although I have to say that it would probably be more natural to use a progressive form and to include an object/wh-clause.

For example: He is teaching himself math. He is teaching himself how to play the piano.

Something along those lines. Another way to refer to a person who teaches himse
