Is this sentence natural English? Any suggestions please?

He started getting absent from college ever since his friends insisted on the payment of the money he had borrowed from them.

  • But this is still not as good as the one with 'missing'.

This combination won't work. Try this:

He started missing classes (at college) ever since ....

Possible, and closer to your original:

He started being absent from college ever since ....

But this is still not as good as the one with 'missing'.
