He said / she said

I have some dialogue and I'm not sure which way is correct to put the tags.

"May I have a cookie?" asked Mary.
"Yes you may," said her mother.

"May I have a cookie?" Mary asked.
"Yes you may," her mother said.

Which of the two sets of sentences is correct? Or is one of the two examples correct in certain situations and the other for different times? Can they be used interchangeably?

Thank you to those who reply.

Both are completely fine and interchangeable. You may want to say that her mother "replied" instead of said, and her mother replied and replied her mother are both fine.
