He said I was / I am

Hi,

I am confused with the following sentences, appreciate if you could advise and give me some examples, thanks.

1) He said I was old, that's why I dyed my hair..

2) He said I am old, that's why I dyed my hair..

3) he said i was beautiful vs he said i am beautiful - what is the difference? Thanks.
