He said, 'I loved her.' [reported speech]

1.Direct: He said, 'I loved her.'
2.Indirect: He said that he had loved her.
3.Indirect: He said that he loved her.

Hi,

I know that number 2 is correct but what about number 3? Can number 3 also be correct or not?
