He played soccer a lot

Can one use:

1) When I asked him why he had a bad knee, he said that he played soccer a lot.

instead of:

2) When I asked him why he had a bad knee, he said that he had played soccer a lot.


He had stopped playing soccer and at the time we had the conversation he didn't play any more.
