Hi there,

He picked up the newborn and showed it to them.

Can we use "it" in reference to a baby whose gender we ignore? I often see "she" and "her" for babies in general, more often than "he" or "him", but in a sentence like the one above, where we are talking about a specific baby, is it possible to use "it" implying that we don't know "its" gender?
