he OR she when an unknown referent

Hi, all

Is there any specific reason or convention to use "she" istead of "he" when the referent is unknown? I saw it in many texts like this:"

" An experimenter who uses her approach ..."

isn't it under the influence of feminism movement?

It's very interesting. because in Arabic Language, If there are 10000000 women, and only one man in a society or community, one should use pronoun and verb in masculine form. Of course, I am Iranian.
