She gives Zinkoff a flute, the least damaging instrument. Still he often veers off course, a wanderer among the clarinets and violins.

Could you rephrase the bolded part in the above for me? For I'm not very sure of its meaning. Thanks.

"veers off course" means (I assume) that he veers away from the tune (i.e. he plays the wrong notes, or plays the notes at the wrong time).

"a wanderer among the clarinets and violins" -- he's "wandering" in the sense that he's off course, and the clarinets and violins are just examples of other instruments that are being played.
