The phone put aside. He now just sits waiting, hoping that she'll call him back sometime.

Is this fine?

And should I switch 'he' and 'now'?

Put a comma after 'aside', and make it all one sentence. And should I switch 'he' and 'now'? You could, but it's a nice sentence as you have written it.
