I have to say it's the first time I've heard the expression. A quick Google search suggests there's very limited use of it in English, but it seems to crop up on occasion, I can understand what it means, but it doesn't sound right to me. Maybe that's just because I've never heard it?

It sounds unusual and unnatural to me, and I don't like it. But I guess the modern-day equivalent would be, "He looked defeated." That is certainly a phrase I have heard and used before.
