Although fathers of my friends are are still alive, tom's father passed away young.

Q) Which sounds better? / "Although ... are still alive ...." or "Although ... are still living ...."

Huhn. I think the opposite. A murder suspect would claim that the victim was still alive when he left him. You might ask a friend whose father just died whether his mother was still living.
