Is there an explanation for this?

Well an explanation is trickier but I can try.

His 'way' relates to a collective pattern of behavour that he does when faced with particular tasks - it's unique to him. As such, I see it as a collective singular - just like how equipment is a collective singular for different kinds of instruments & tools.

As for 'technology', I am guided by your use of 'has' rather than 'have'. "
