He had to start cleaning up after himself or move out

Please condisder the following sentence:
Todd drew a line in the sand by giving his roommate an ultimatum about his sloppiness - he had to start cleaning up after himself or move out.

I understand what it meas, that "cleaning up after himself" is a bit of nuisance. I take it as: he had to start cleaning up after (whatever mess he creates) himself or move out. Is my take on the spot? Please let me know. Thanks.
