He had done it once and could do it again.

In this sentence (the one in subject line), is it necessary to say: He had done it once and he could do it again. Must we add 'he' the second time?

Anyway, here goes: He had done it once and could do it again (1).
He had done it once and he could do it again (2).

I am wondering whether the second 'he' in (2) is necessary.

I would phrase it a bit differently.

He had done it once and could have done it again.

P.S. When you get farther down in the thread, it takes a lot of scrolling to see the header text, so it's much better to include it in the body of your post. Especially inconvenient is the fact that if you are editing an answer, you can't see the header at all!
