Hi,

Can you look at this sentence and explain why the author used the phrase "he found himself doing"?
Why did he not say "he threw his arms around his father"?

Tears of joy filled Peter’s eyes and he found himself throwing his arms around his father.

When you use that idiom, you're saying that the person did not originally intend to do what he did. Before he did it he would not have predicted that he was going to do it. Circumstances arose which caused him to do it instinctively before he even became conscious of what was happening.
