He drove me, screaming, to the fringes of my mind

"He drove me, screaming, to the fringes of my mind." (a son about his father)
I'm a bit confused. It's the father who was screaming, not his son, am I correct?
Another thought is that maybe the "screaming" have some figurative meaning... but it's just a thought...
