He doesn’t want a Hail Mary

The medical team came by on rounds, discussing Paul’s case outside the room, where his family
and I joined them. Paul’s acute respiratory failure was likely rapid cancer progressing. His carbon
dioxide level was rising still—a hardening indication for intubation. The family was torn: Paul’s
oncologist had phoned in, hopeful that the acute problem could be ameliorated, but the physicians
present were less optimistic. I entreated them to weigh in with as much conviction as possible on the
chance of reversing his abrupt decline.
“He doesn’t want a Hail Mary,” I said. “If he doesn’t have a chance of meaningful time, he wants
to take the mask off and hold Cady.”
what does"He doesn’t want a Hail Mary"mean?

He doesn't want a last desperate attempt that is highly unlikely to succeed, eg trying an untested and risky drug.. The underlying mage is that of praying to the Virgin Mary for a miracle.

The number of questions you are asking is getting unmanageable.

Hi

This refers to the Roman Catholic faith. I'm no expert, but I'll do my best

There are certain times when a prayer is made to the mother of Jesus. The one referred to here is:

- Holy Mary, Mother of ***, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death

In other words, it can be a prayer at the moment of death and it would usually be given by a priest at

dave_anonI think that means he wants to go on living, even if it is only for a short while longer
Not exactly. It means he's not asking for a miracle cure.

Hi

I cross-posted with Jim and Clive there. I'll think about it, but I'm not at all sure that the prayer is asking for a miraculous escape from death. I need to see something that shows what the prayer means. It may just mean a hope that the person's soul goes safely to an afterlife

In American football, a "Hail Mary" is a long pass thrown by the quarterback into the end zone, hoping that one of his receivers can catch it for the winning score. Usually there are only a few seconds left on the game clock, so it is the team's only chance to win.

Here is a famous one thrown by Dallas Cowboys quarterback #12 (Roger Staubach) to receiver #88 ( Drew Pearson)

It's not. And the words of that prayer are irrelevant. And the specific prayer is equally irrelevant.

The expression comes from American football, specifically from the Notre Dame team, Notre Dame (Our Lady, i.e., Mary) being a Catholic university. A Hail-Mary
